How to Speak English Well ?

Bagaimana berbicara Bahasa Inggris dengan baik ?

 

Many countries like India, Philippines, and Singapore use English as their national language. Indonesia uses English as a second language. English is an important language and spoken all over the world. English is needed in the modern world. Those who want to make progress and use technology must MASTER English.

There are four skills to master English ; listening, reading, writing and speaking. All of the skills must be mastered to be fluent in English. These skills cannot be separated from one each other.

However, speaking may be considered the most important. It requires your courage. We should not worry about making mistakes when we talk to foreigners. They will consider that we are still learning. We should not to be pessimistic. Someone can be good at grammar and vocabulary. It does not mean that s/he is also good at conversation.

There are many ways to improve your speaking ability:

1. Be diligent in speaking. Practice whatever you know without hesitation. Your courage to speak is important.
2. Look for someone to talk to. With your friend you can exchange ideas and share experiences.
3. Try to build up your vocabulary. Sometimes you may want to say something in English but you do not know how to say the word appropriately. This is because you lack vocabulary. You are still poor in it.
4. Watch TV Programs

Watching English films is a good way to exercise your listening ability. The right program are English and Western films. Try to understand what are saying without reading the Indonesian subtitles.

5. Listen to English broadcasts carefully. It is a very helpful program. Listen to it carefully. You can choose the broadcasts you like, for example : the ABC, the BBC, and others.
6. Create extra opportunities to practice English. It is the task of all students of the English Department to create various activities concerning the subject besides learning the language. Activities such as L.E.D Love English Debate club, and Speaking competition entertainment.
7. Self-study. Another activity supporting the success of study especially in speaking is self-study. If you realize the importance of self-study, you will automatically practice it. By doing so, your speaking will improve. You will gain self-confidence in speaking English.
