Sekarang ini kemampuan berbahasa asing sangatlah dibutuhkan baik untuk mencari pekerjaan maupun melanjutkan studi. Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa yang banyak dipakai dan sekaligus menjadi bahasa pengantar dalam dunia bisnis, organisasi internasional, urusan diplomatik negara, maupun pendidikan menjadikan banyak orang yang ingin menguasai bahasa ini. Belajar bahasa inggris bertahun-tahun baik di sekolahan maupun mengikuti les/kursus bahasa tidak lantas membuat orang tersebut dapat diakui kemampuan bahasa inggrisnya. Untuk itulah diadakannya tes kemampuan bahasa, dimana tes tersebut menguji kelayakan kemampuan bahasa seseorang yag kemudian dituangkan dalam bentuk angka.
TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) adalah salah satu tes yang diakui secara Internasional. Jika seseorang ingin diakui kemampuan bahasa inggrisnya maka ia harus menjalani tes TOEFL dan menunjukkan skor TOEFL-nya. Skor TOEFL inilah yang akan menunjukkan level kemampuan bahasa inggris seseorang. Jenis TOEFL sangatlah beragam mulai dari ITP TOEFL/PBT TOEFL, IBT, Prediction TOEFL. Banyaknya jenis tes TOEFL inilah yang terkadang membuat seseorang bingung untuk memilih TOEFL mana yang harus diambil. Keempat jenis TOEFL yang saya sebutkan diatas sangat berbeda satu dengan yang lain tidak hanya berbeda dari segi tes akan tetapi berbeda juga dari segi biaya dan kegunaan. Di posting ini saya akan membagikan sedikit informasi mengenai tes tersebut.
TOEFL® diciptakan oleh ETS (Educational Testing Service) di Princeton, New Jersey, Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1964. Tujuan penciptaan TOEFL® adalah untuk menyaring mahasiswa yang mendaftar di perguruan tinggi yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantarnya. Hingga saat ini TOEFL® telah mengalami 3 kali pergantian format.

A Reliable Assessment of English
The TOEFL ITP® tests are paper-based and use academic and social content to evaluate the English-language proficiency of nonnative English speakers, giving you confidence about your students’ ability in a real-world academic setting. All questions are multiple choice and students answer questions by filling in an answer sheet. The tests evaluate skills in three areas:
- Listening Comprehension measures the ability to understand spoken English as it is used in colleges and universities.
- Structure and Written Expression measures recognition of selected structural and grammatical points in standard written English.
- Reading Comprehension measures the ability to read and understand academic reading material in English.
The TOEFL ITP and TOEFL iBT® tests are used for separate purposes and administered differently. The TOEFL iBT test is a high-stakes assessment administered by ETS. Institutions use TOEFL iBT test scores to make high-stakes decisions, such as university-level student admissions. TOEFL ITP tests are administered by institutions or our ETS preferred network and used for specific purposes including placement, monitoring progress and more.
2.TEST PREDICTION – ITP TOEFL (Rp 450.000 = USD$ 33 )
Unlike the previous TOEFL type that can only be implemented in ETS institutions, TOEFL Prediction can be implemented in almost all English Language institutions that have registered Nilek and NPSN and with a very affordable price ranges between 450-500 IDR. More test materials refer to “ex ITP TOEFL material”, meaning taken from ITP TOEFL in previous years. Prediction TOEFL is usually taken before someone takes the “real” test because of the relatively cheaper cost, is also considered as a try-out and experience in order to measure our own English abilities, if the score is still low then there is still time to follow the “TOEFL preparation class” anywhere. However, it is worth noting that the Certificate issued from the “Toefl Prediction Test” is very useful to be used to be the entry ticket of today’s workplace where English is the international language, ie : as one of the certificates required to apply for employment as an employee of an international company, at the construction company , CPNS -Test, private employees, NGO employees, medical personnel / professional agencies, government agencies in Indonesia, BUMN, or someone who just wants to know his ability of English.
Tidak seperti jenis TOEFL sebelumnya yang hanya bisa dilaksanakan di lembaga ETS, Prediction TOEFL bisa dilaksanakan di hampir semua lembaga bahasa inggris yang terdaftar memiliki Nilek dan NPSN dan dengan harga yang sangat terjangkau berkisar antara 450-500 ribu rupiah. Materi tes lebih mengacu pada “ex materi ITP TOEFL”, artinya diambil dari ITP TOEFL tahun-tahun sebelumnya. Prediction TOEFL biasa diambil sebelum seseorang mengambil tes yang “sebenarnya” karena biaya yang relatif lebih murah, juga dianggap sebagai try-out dan pengalaman agar dapat mengukur kemampuan Bhs Inggris kita sendiri, jika score masih rendah maka masih ada waktu mengikuti “kelas persiapan TOEFL” dimanapun. Namun tak kalah pentingnya Sertifikat yang dikeluarkan dari “Toefl Prediction Test” ini sangat berguna digunakan untuk menjadi tiket masuk kerja zaman sekarang ini dimana bahasa inggris adalah bahasa internasional, yakni sebagai salah satu sertifikat yang disyaratkan untuk melamar pekerjaan sebagai karyawan perusahaan internasional, di perusahaan konstruksi, test cpns, karyawan swasta, karyawan NGO, tenaga medis/agensi profesional, instansi pemerintahan di Indonesia, BUMN, ataupun seseorang yang hanya sekedar ingin mengetahui kemampuan bahasa inggrisnya.

Perbedaannya adalah jika di PBT kita memakai lembar soal dan lembar jawab lain halnya dengan IBT TOEFL. IBT TOEFL menggunakan sistem ICT dalam penyelenggaraannya serta tes dihadapkan dengan komputer dan di komputer itulah soal dan jawaban ditulis. Biaya yang dikeluarkan untuk mengikuti tes ini juga mahal seperti PBT yaitu sekitar 2,5 juta rupiah. Kegunaan IBT TOEFL juga hampir sama yaitu untuk mencari kerja di perusahaan yang mempunyai jaringan internasional dan melanjutkan studi ke luar negeri seperti gelar MBA.

TOEFL iBT® Test Scores
Your scores are based on your performance on the questions in the test. You must answer at least 1 question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least 1 essay, and complete at least 1 Speaking task to receive an official score. For the TOEFL iBT® test, administered via the internet, you will receive 4 scaled section scores and a total score:
